With the Future State timeline having seemingly been prevented by the latest events in DC's present - becoming a broad prediction of what's coming in the future rather than the exact events readers can expect - Future State: Gotham will play a major part in deciding how influential this dark timeline remains. The killer even appears to be a cannibal by issue's end, finishing off Grifter in a show of his abilities and raw power.įuture State: Gotham wisely doesn't try to recreate the original Joker's magic in the new version, instead turning him into a major physical threat more comparable to Bane or Killer Croc. The Next Joker also seems to have superhuman powers, as he is able to crash through a door, jump off a cliff, take several bullets to the chest, survive a grenade-like explosive, and yet still move with a speed and ferocity that shocks his opponent.

None of that matters to the Next Joker, who seems to prefer operating on his own. For instance, whereas the original Joker wasn’t opposed to fighting it out against an opponent, especially if the opponent was Batman, he generally preferred that his henchmen or partners do most of the fighting in order to give him time to escape. The Next Joker introduced in the issue seems much more criminally deviant than the original.

Including the devastating fall of the Teen Titans, the supposed death of Batman, and the encroaching magical threat of the Unkindness, Future State turned Gotham into a dystopia where the Bat-Family must fight every day to prevent the city slipping into chaos. In this iteration of Gotham, Mayor Christopher Nakano has handed over vigilante prevention to the fascist Magistrate organization, prone to shooting first and asking questions later in a city that no longer trusts its heroes. The Future State initiative, which followed on the heels of Dark Nights: Death Metal, introduced fans to the DC Universe's potential future. Flect can absorb the energy he is struck with and redirect it to his opponent.
